Pediatric Dentistry

Taking your child to the dentist for routine consultations from a young age is a healthy practice. It allows us to conduct a thorough screening of the oral cavity and determine the onset of any dental conditions that could affect their oral health. As pediatric dentists, we emphasize this and modify our approach to make children and younger patients feel absolutely safe and comfortable at our dental practice in Santa Rosa, CA.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

Ideally, your child's first visit to the dentist should be when they are between the age of six months to a year old. This is the time when the teeth start to erupt, and monitoring their growth carefully becomes crucial. The dentist will keep a close track of your child's oral health and the development of their teeth. Also, we will suggest suitable practices to help maintain their dental health.

Cavity Treatment

Children are more prone to cavities because of their oral habits such as excessive consumption of sweets and sugary foods, improper oral hygiene, etc. When children eat a lot of chocolates, pastries, gummy bears, and other sweets, bacteria in their mouths feed on the sugary residues left on the teeth. They gradually build up on the teeth as plaque and tartar deposits and erode the enamel by causing demineralization. This, combined with improper brushing and flossing techniques, can cause severe decay of the teeth.

We treat cavities by removing the tartar deposits and decay from the cavities. This is either done by ultrasonic scaling or through laser treatment. Further, the cavity will be cleaned thoroughly by washing away the removed debris. The dentist will prepare a suitable filling material and apply it to the cavities. It would either be made from dental-grade ceramic or composite resin, both of which are tooth-colored material and biocompatible.

Sealants and Fluoride Treatment

Dental sealants are applied on the occlusal grooves of the molars and premolars. They keep the oral bacteria and food residues from getting deposited in the grooves, significantly preventing cavities.

Fluoride is an essential mineral present in the teeth that increases their immunity to cavities. Though the ideal amount of fluoride is supplied to the body through drinking water and the toothpaste we use, it may sometimes become inadequate, making the teeth more susceptible to cavities and demineralization. Hence, we can help strengthen the teeth using fluoride treatment.

Malocclusion Treatment

Malocclusion or the misalignment of the upper and lower teeth is often caused by heredity or poor oral habits such as thumb sucking, using an improper pacifier, baby teeth prematurely falling off, etc. In case you feel your child is facing oral concerns due to their misaligned teeth, please bring them to our dental practice in Santa Rosa, CA, and we'll conduct a thorough diagnosis and advise you about the best treatment.
