Periodontal Services

Periodontitis is a gum disease known to have severe symptoms that could badly affect your oral health. It usually starts as a mild inflammation of the gums and occasional bleeding. At this stage, it would be called gingivitis. If gingivitis is not given periodontal treatment for a long time, it could worsen to a more severe condition and compromise your oral health significantly.

What Are the Symptoms of Periodontitis?

  • Inflamed and bleeding gums
  • Discharge of pus from the soft gum tissues
  • Redness or discoloration of the gums
  • Acute pain and discomfort while biting and chewing food
  • Receding gum line and deeper gum pockets
  • Decay of the gum tissues

What Causes Gum Disease?

The most prominent cause of gum disease is the plaque and tartar that have built up on the tooth surfaces. Tartar deposits are filled with microbes that usually release toxic discharges when they feed on the food residues in the mouth. These discharges could erode the enamel and cause demineralization and cavities, infect the soft gum tissues and cause gum disease, and significantly increase your bad breath. Some of the other causes of gum disease are injuries to gums and root canal infection.

What Periodontal Services Does Cascade Family Dental Offer to Treat Gum Disease?

  • Oral cleaning:Oral cleaning is the meticulous removal of microbial deposits from the teeth' surfaces. It includes scaling and root planing (deep cleaning). Both these procedures are performed using an ultrasonic scaling device that has a metal tip that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies. It dislodges the tartar deposits, which are then washed away using a jet of water. Deep cleaning is known to improve gum health significantly as it removes harmful bacteria and allows the infected tissues to heal effectively.
  • Laser therapy: Using a laser to remove the infected tissues is an advanced alternative to the conventional method of surgical removal. The dentist would concentrate the intense laser beam on the infected tissues, vaporizing them and instantly sealing the wound underneath. This process eliminates the need for sutures and a long healing time, and the pain and bleeding during the process are next to none.
  • Gum grafting:Gum grafting is the process of extracting healthy soft tissues from a different part of the mouth and grafting them to the receded area of the gums. We at Cascade Family Dental ideally extract tissues from the palate and surgically graft them to the gums. A suitable post-operation healing time would be prescribed to allow them to fuse with the existing tissues and increase the gum volume naturally.
  • Medication: Antibiotic medication may be used to arrest the spread of the infection and allow the tissues to heal. One such popularly-used antibiotic is Arestin.
